Workplace Gossip and Rumor: the Information Ethics Perspective
نویسندگان
چکیده
Information Communication Technology (ICT) contributes effectively to spreading of all sorts of information, including gossip and rumors. The continuous growth of online communications calls thus for analysis of their mechanisms and consequences, as moral responsibility increases with increasing information. Taking the Information Ethics (IE) perspective we discuss gossip and its role in social networks. Interesting attempts have been made to computationally model gossip and reputation. However more research is needed in order to gain a comprehensive interdisciplinary understanding of gossip and be able to form a common view of this old human practice as it appears in the ICT age.

Gossip vs. Markov Chains, and Randomness-Efficient Rumor Spreading
We study gossip algorithms for the rumor spreading problem which asks one node to deliver a rumor to all nodes in an unknown network. We present the first protocol for any expander graph G with n nodes such that, the protocol informs every node in O(log n) rounds with high probability, and uses Õ(log n) random bits in total. The runtime of our protocol is tight, and the randomness requirement o...

In this paper I present a software tool for simulating a dynamic parimutuel market (DPM) based on an underlying model for the spread of information through a community. I use a standard gossip model for the information flow through the community. Typically these models are used to model network congestion, but I have taken a more literal interpretation of the “gossip”. The typical scenario for ...
متن کاملWho are the objects of positive and negative gossip at work?: A social network perspective on workplace gossip
Gossip is informal talking about colleagues. Taking a social network perspective, we argue that group boundaries and social status in the informal workplace network determine who the objects of positive and negative gossip are. Gossip networks were collected among 36 employees in a public child care organization, and analyzed using exponential random graph modeling (ERGM). As hypothesized, both...
متن کاملPerspectives on Workplace Gossip: Why and How Gossip Can Serve Groups
Gossip in the workplace has generally been ignored by researchers and often criticized by practitioners. The authors apply a transdisciplinary evolutionary approach to argue that gossip is a natural part of social organizations and that certain conditions can encourage socially-redeeming gossip. They draw on case studies involving cattle ranchers, members of a competitive rowing team, and airli...
متن کاملGossip vs. Markov Chains, and Randomness-Efficient Rumor Spreading | Proceedings of the Twenty-Sixth Annual ACM-SIAM Symposium on Discrete Algorithms | Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics
We study gossip algorithms for the rumor spreading problem which asks one node to deliver a rumor to all nodes in an unknown network, and every node is only allowed to call one neighbor in each round. In this work we introduce two fundamentally new techniques in studying the rumor spreading problem: First, we establish a new connection between the rumor spreading process in an arbitrary graph a...
